Biografía Alberto Larraguibel Morales
Nació en Angol, en la IX Región de la Araucanía. Vivía cerca de la Pampa de Granaderos, que era un campo donde los militares del Regimiento Húsares entrenaban con sus unidades montadas y también en forma deportiva.
Realizó sus estudios de preparatoria y humanidades en el Seminario de Concepción y en el Liceo de Angol. El 1 de enero de 1938 ingresa a la Escuela Militar del Libertador Bernardo O'Higgins y dos años más tarde egresó con el grado se Alférez del arma de Caballería, siendo destinado al Regimiento Húsares de Angol, unidad que había inspirado su carrera militar.
En este regimiento destaca en las concursos de equitación y llegó a ser parte del Equipo Ecuestre del Regimiento. Obtuvo grandes resultados que los llevaron a que fuera nombrado en 1946 alumno del curso Extraordinario de Equitación en la Escuela de Caballería de Quillota, siendo recién Subteniente.
El 16 de enero de 1947 se titula como Maestro de equitación. Con este título representa a Chile en múltiples competencias nacionales e internacionales, con destacadas participaciones. Posteriormente sirve en diversas unidades militares del Ejército como en el Regimiento Cazadores, Escuela de Caballería, Regimiento Coraceros, la Academia de Guerra, Depósito Central de Remontas, Guías, Húsares, la Comandancia del Haras Nacional, Dirección de Fomento Equino y Remonta, y la Dirección de Logística.
En 1966 fue nombrado Comandante del Regimiento Húsares, esta unidad marcó un hito en su trayectoria militar. El 1 de agosto de 1973 pasó a retiro y el 17 de septiembre de 1976 fue llamado nuevamente al servicio activo del Ejército. En 1974 se cumplieron 25 años del récord mundial de salto alto a caballo y por este honor se le concede por gracia el ascenso al grado de Coronel. Finalmente en 1979 se retira definitivamente de la Institución, después de haber pemanecido en el Ejército por más de 38 años.
Trayectoria deportiva
Es conocido en Chile por ser el único deportista que ha alcanzado un récord mundial para el país. Desde el inicio de su carrera deportiva y militar, este jinete tuvo destacadas participaciones en competencias a nivel nacional e internacional. Durante su carrera integró el equipo de salto de los Regimientos Húsares, Cazadores, Coraceros y Escuela de Caballería.
Internacionalmente participó en concursos ecuestres en Europa y Sudamérica, tales como los efectuados en Roma, Madrid, Vichy, Lucerna, Río de Janeiro, sólo por nombrar los principales. También integró el equipo representativo de Chile en los Juegos Panamericanos de Buenos Aires 1955.
En 1947 recibe el caballo Faithful, que posteriormente cambiaría de nombre y se llamaría Huaso. Este caballo venía de los hipódromos y no había tenido buenos resultados, sin embargo Larraguibel lo entrena en salto de altura, logrando importantes concursos a nivel sudamericano y el máximo logro que fue batir el récord mundial de salto alto a caballo.
Otros logros deportivos
Antes del récord mundial, había batido el récord sudaméricano en 1948 con 2,37 metros, también con su caballo Huaso. En los Juegos Panamericanos de 1951, Alberto Larraguibel obtuvo el primer puesto individual en la "Copa de las Naciones", logrando la medalla de oro.
Posteriormente se preparó para disputar los Juegos Olímpicos de Helsinki 1952. Fue a una gira a Europa donde obtuvo buenos resultados. Sin embargo no puede integrar el equipo de salto en las Olimpiadas porque tuvo un accidente durante su gira por Europa, quedando lesionado. Sin embargo Chile obtiene buenos resultados, a pesar de no contar con Larraguibel. El equipo chileno obtiene la medalla de plata en el salto individual y en salto por equipos. Este equipo estuvo integrado por los oficiales de Carabineros de Chile, Óscar Cristi y César Mendoza y por el teniente de Ejército Javier Echeverría. Este equipo fue liderado por el legendario Eduardo Yáñez Zavala, quien en 1981 recibió del Comité Olimpico Internacional la distinción como "El Mejor Jinete de Todos los Tiempos".
Después del récord
En 1953 dejó de competir por determinación médica. Sin embargo asume cargos de conductor de selecciones.
En 1979 se cumplieron 30 años del récord y la periodista María Angélica de Luigi le preguntó al entonces Coronel Larraguibel si creía imposible que alguien batiera su marca.
“No. Yo estoy convencido de que es posible. Sólo es necesario que se dé, como se me dio a mí, esa armonía perfecta de caballo y jinete, de equilibrio y velocidad, y que haya otro hombre dispuesto a lanzar su corazón por encima del obstáculo e irlo a buscar, sin vacilaciones, al otro lado”, respondió el plusmarquista.
Monumento
En diciembre de 2007 se inaugurará un monumento que se llamará "Capitán de Ejército Alberto Larraguibel". Actualmente esta escultura todavía está en construcción y su lugar será el nuevo paseo costero de Viña del Mar. El trabajo es obra de Francisco Torres, quien está afinando los últimos detalles en Quilpué. La figura es de bronce, mide cinco metros de altura y pesa casi cinco toneladas.
Huaso (caballo)
Huaso es el nombre del caballo de Alberto Larraguibel, con quien rompió el récord de salto alto de equitación el 5 de febrero de 1949 en el Regimiento Coraceros de Viña del Mar, al batir los 2,47 metros de altura quebrando el récord anterior de 2,44 metros, en manos del jinete italiano Antonio Gutiérrez, en "Ossopo".
Nació en 1933 y medía 1,68 metros, antes se llamaba "Faithfu" pero luego fue rebautizado como "Huaso". En 1949, al momento de la hazaña tenía 16 años. Luego de batir el Récord Mundial de Salto Alto, Huaso pasó a un merecido descanso en la Escuela de Caballería, donde tenía el derecho de pasearse por los prados y jardines sin que nadie lo montara hasta el día de su muerte, el 24 de agosto de 1961, con 29 años. Actualmente sus restos descansan en la Escuela de Caballería Blindada de Quillota.
El Estadio Municipal Alberto Larraguibel Morales es un estadio de fútbol ubicado en la ciudad de Angol, Chile. En este estadio se disputan los encuentros de local de Malleco Unido, club de la tercera división chilena. Tiene una capacidad para 2.345 espectadores.
El estadio tiene el nombre en honor del notable jinete nacido en Angol Alberto Larraguibel Morales, quien en 1949 batió el récord mundial de salto alto a caballo.
ALBERTO LARRAGUIBEL MORALES
Was born in Angol, in the IX Region of La Araucanía. He lived near the Pampa de Granaderos, who was a field where the Hussars Regiment militaries training with their mounted units and also in sport form.
He studied at Seminary of Concepción and Angol High School. On January 1st, 1938 He entered at the Libertador Bernardo O´Higgins Military School and two years later with the rank of the Alférez Cavalry Gun, being destined to the Angol Hussars Regiment, a unit that had inspired his military career.
In this regiment stands out in the horse riding competitions and became part of the equestrian team of the regiment. He obtained great results that led him to that it was appointed in 1946 as a student of the Extraordinary course of Equitación in the School of Cavalry of Quillota, being a Lieutenant.
On January 16, 1947 was graduated as a riding teacher. With this title represents Chile in many national and international competitions with outstanding shares. Afterwards, he served in various military units of the Army in Cazadores Regiment, Cavalry school, Regiment Cuirassiers, the War Academy, Central deposit of remounts, Guides, Hussars, the National Haras Command, Direction of promoting equine and Remount, and the Direction of logistics.
In 1966 he was named as Commander of the Hussars Regiment, this unit marked a landmark in his military trajectory. On August 1st, 1973 he became a retreat, and on September 17th, 1976 he was again called to active service of the Army. In 1974, 25 anniversary of the world high jump record on horse for this honor is granted by grace the promotion to the rank of Colonel. Finally, in 1979 he retired definitely from the institution, after having been in the army for more than 38 years.
Sport Trajectory
He is known in Chile as the only athlete who has achieved a world record for the country. Since the beginning of his sports and military careers, this rider had outstanding participations in national and international level competitions. During his career, he joined at Hussars regiments, Cazadores and cavalry school riding team.
He participated internationally in equestrian competitions in Europe and South America, such as carried out in Rome, Madrid, Vichy, Lucerne, Río de Janeiro, etc. He was also the representative of the Chile team in the Pan-American Games in Buenos Aires 1955.
In 1947 he received the Faithful horse, which later change the name as "Huaso". This horse came from racecourses and had not good results, however Larraguibel trains him in the high jump, achieving important competitions at the South American level and the maximum achievement which was the world record of highest jump by a horse.
World Record
On February 5th, 1949 in the Cuirassiers Regiment of Viña del Mar, the Captain with his horse Huaso manage to overcome the 2.47 meters at 17:59 hrs. With this mark he broke the previous record of 2.44 meters, performed by the Italian rider Antonio Gutiérrez, in "Ossopo" (October 27th 1938). Over 5,000 people were attended, which included the President of the Gabriel González Videla Republic, 6 international judges and surprised crew of the French ship school “Jean d’Arc”.
This event was inserted in the program of the International Equestrian competition involving teams from Bolivia, Colombia and Chile. At the end were the Alberto Larraguibel Captain with Huaso and Luis Riquelme Lieutenant with Chileno. In the tie-breaker the obstacle was placed at 2,14 meters. The Huaso passed it the first opportunity and Chilean in the second. Alberto Larraguibel after jumping the obstacle, and stumbling his horse to take land, threw itself to the ground in a spectacular fall. The next height was 2,47 meters to break the world record. Chileno could not pass its three effort, falling down the rider on the third occasion. The binomial of Larraguibel on his first attempt, the horse refused the obstacle, to penalized for two failures, in the second knock down the jump, with two fouls more. But in the third he jumped cleanly getting the world record.
To date is the only sporting world record which has Chile and, in addition, one of the oldest in the history of the sport without being broken.
Other sporting achievements
Before the world record, he had broken the sudamerican record in 1948 with 2.37 meters, also with his horse Huaso. At the Pan-American Games in 1951 Alberto Larraguibel won the first individual position in the "Nations Cup", making the gold medal.
Later was prepared to dispute the Olympic Games of Helsinki in 1952. He went a tour of Europe, where he obtained good results. However, he could not integrate the jump team in the Olympics because he had an accident during his tour in Europe, being injured. However, Chile gets good results, despite not counting with Larraguibel. The Chilean team obtained the silver medal in the individual jumping and the jump teams. This team was composed of Carabineros de Chile, Oscar Cristi, César Mendoza, and the Army lieutenant Javier Echeverría. This team was led by the legendary Eduardo Yáñez Zavala, who received the distinction as "The best rider of all the times" from the International Olympic Committee in 1981.
After the record
In 1953 he left to compete for medical determination. However, he assumes the positions of conductor of selections.
In 1979, 30 anniversary of the record and the journalist María Angélica de Luigi asked the Colonel Larraguibel if he thought impossible that somebody break his mark.
"NO. I'm convinced that it is possible. It is only necessary that happen, as occurred to me, that perfect harmony with the horse, balance and speed, and there is another man ready to throw his heart over the obstacle and pick him up, without hesitation, on the other side”, he replied the record holder.
Monument
In December 2007 was inaugurated a monument called the "Army Captain Alberto Larraguibel." In the new coastal walk of Viña del Mar. The work was made by Francisco Torres, who is refining the last details in Quilpué. The figure was made of bronze, has 5m height and weighs 5 tons.
Huaso Horse
The name of the Alberto Larraguibe horse is Huaso, who broke the record for high jump of riding on February 5th, 1949 at the Coraceros Regiment in Viña del Mar, for beat the 2.47 meters and breaking the previous record of 2.44 meters performed by the Italian rider Antonio Gutiérrez, in "Ossopo".
It was born in 1933 its height was about 1.68m and it used to be called 'Faithfu' but then was renamed as "Huaso". In 1949, when he broke the mark he was 16. After breaking the World Record of High Jump by Horse, Huaso spent well-deserved rest in the Cavalry School, where it had the right to take a walk by the meadows and gardens without nobody mounted it until the day of its death, August 24 1961, with 29 years old. At the moment its corpse in the cavalry armoured school of Quillota.
The Alberto Larraguibel Morales Sports Complex: It has a capacity for 2,345 spectators, has a Cutlery GYM, Public Swimming Pool, Tejo Field, in the entrance of the sport complex there is a Replica in real size of the horse jumping obstacle.
At the entrance of Angol, is located the Alberto Larraguibel Morales Park, with playgrounds, gardens and meadows areas always green and a replica of the horse jumping obstacle.
The stadium is named in honor of remarkable rider, born in Angol, Alberto Larraguibel Morales, who in 1949 broke the world record in high jump horse.
